On November 27th, San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk, a gay-rights activist, was shot to death inside City Hall by former supervisor Dan White

On February 15, After 15 rounds, Muhammad Ali lost the World Heavyweight boxing title to Leon Spinks in Las Vegas.

On May 12th, The Commerce Department said hurricanes would no longer be given only female names.

On November 18th, California Congressman Leo J. Ryan and four other people were killed in Jonestown, Guyana, by members of the Peoples Temple; the killings were followed by a night of mass murder and suicide by 912 cult members.
