On July 5th, Arthur Ashe became the first black man to win a Wimbledon singles title as he defeated Jimmy Connors

On January 5th, "The Wiz," a musical version of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" featuring an all-black cast, opened on Broadway.

On July 30th, Former Teamsters union president Jimmy Hoffa disappeared in suburban Detroit -- although presumed dead, his remains have never been found.

On September 5th, President Ford escaped an attempt on his life by Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a disciple of Charles Manson, in Sacramento, California. In November, a federal jury in Sacramento, California found Fromme guilty of trying to assassinate President Ford. (Fromme is serving a life prison sentence.)

On September 18th, Newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst was captured by the FBI in San Francisco, 19 months after being kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.

On October 1, In a match marketed as the 'Thrilla in Manila' Muhammad Ali knocked out Joe Frazier and retained the World Heavyweight title.

On November 10th, The ore-hauling ship "Edmund Fitzgerald" and its crew of 29 vanished during a storm in Lake Superior.

Also this year, Microsoft is in business in Seattle, Washington. The computer software company is founded by Paul Allen, age 22, and Harvard dropout Bill Gates, age 19.
