On February 27th, in political protest, members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota, the site of the 1890 Sioux massacre

On January 22nd, The Supreme Court handed down its "Roe versus Wade" decision, which legalized abortion using a trimester approach.

Two days later, President Nixon nominated House minority leader Gerald R. Ford of Michigan to succeed Spiro T. Agnew as vice president.
