On January 22nd, The Supreme Court handed down its "Roe versus Wade" decision, which legalized abortion using a trimester approach.
On February 27th, In political protest, members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota, the site of the 1890 Sioux massacre. (The occupation lasted for 71 days)
On May 14th, The United States launched Skylab One, its first manned space station.
On September 20th, Singer-songwriter Jim Croce died in a plane crash near Natchitoches, Louisiana; he was 30.
On October 10th, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, accused of accepting bribes, pleaded no contest to one count of federal income tax evasion, and resigned his office. Two days later, President Nixon nominated House minority leader Gerald R. Ford of Michigan to succeed Spiro T. Agnew as vice president.
On November 16th, President Nixon signed the Alaska Pipeline measure into law.
