On February 21st, President Nixon began his historic visit to China.
On March 22nd, Congress sent the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution to the states for ratification. (It fell three states short of the 38 needed for approval.)
On May 15th, George C. Wallace was shot by Arthur Bremer and left paralyzed while campaigning in Laurel, Maryland, for the Democratic presidential nomination.
On June 17th, President Nixon's eventual downfall began with the arrest of five burglars inside Democratic national headquarters in Washington DC's Watergate complex. Six days later, President Nixon and White House chief of staff H.R. Haldeman discussed a plan to use the CIA to obstruct the FBI's Watergate investigation. (A tape recording of this conversation sparked Nixon's resignation in 1974.)
On August 12th, The last American combat ground-troops left Vietnam.
On September 4th, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz won a record seventh Olympic gold medal, in the 400-meter relay at the Munich Summer Olympics.
