On April 13th, "Apollo 13," four-fifths of the way to the moon, was crippled when a tank containing liquid oxygen burst. (The astronauts managed to return safely.)
On May 4th, Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on anti-war protesters at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine others. The decision to bring the Ohio National Guard onto the Kent State University campus was directly related to decisions regarding American involvement in the Vietnam War.
On June 22nd, President Nixon signed a measure lowering the voting age to 18.
On September 18th, 27 year old Jimi Hendrix died in London after mixing barbiturates and alcohol.
October 4th, Rock singer Janis Joplin, 27, was found dead of a heroin overdose in her Hollywood hotel room.
